Wissenschaft auf 78°N

Von Mitte Februar bis Ende März 2012 geht es für mich, Kay Helfricht, nach Spitzbergen. Am UNIS Universitätszentrum in Longyearbyen werde ich an einem Glaziologie-Kurs teilnehmen. Bei diesem Kurs werden Inhalte zum Stand der Wissenschaft hinsichtlich glaziologisch relevanter Prozesse und deren Umsetzung in der Modellierung vermittelt. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den Reaktionen von arktischen Gletschern als Folge von Klimaänderungen. Neben Seminaren und Vorlesungen sowie Exkursionen im Rahmen des Kurses wird auch Zeit bleiben, die einzigartige Kulisse der arktischen Natur zu erkunden und zu erleben. Die geografische Lage, die klimatischen Bedingungen und der Zeitpunkt zum Wechsel von Polarnacht zu Polartag werden diesen Trip für mich zu einem sehr intensiven und einzigartigen Erlebnis werden lassen.

From the mid of February to the end of March I, Kay Helfricht, will attend at a Arctic Glaciology course at the UNIS University Centre in Svalbard. The course is a systematic survey of modern research into glacial processes, and the response of glaciers and ice sheets to climate change. The climatic conditions and the arctic nature will provide an impressive framework to lectures, field trips and ski tours to the surrounding mountains of Longyearbyen.

Two-day adventure

Das stabile Wetter am vergangenen Wochenende nutzen wir, Mathilde, Pernille, Morgan, Mauro und ich, für ein unbeschreiblich schönes 2-Tages-Abenteuer. Mit zwei Pulkas und Wellmann (schöner Hund, warnt - so heißt es - vor Eisbären und zieht auch Pulkas) ging es vom Adventdalen aus über die Eiskappe Foxfonna hinüber zum Foxpasset. Am südlich vom Pass gelegenen Dalburgbreen schlugen wir bei wenig Sicht auf rund 700 m über Meer unser Camp auf. Nachdem das Zelt stand und Fellmann versorgt war, gab es ein ausgezeichnetes, von einem Topf Schoko-Bananen gekröntes Abendessen in der von den Mädels errichteten Freiluft-Küche. In der Nacht teilten sich vier das Zelt und abwechselnd übernahm eine/r die Eisbärenwache (verbunden mit Beobachtung der wunderschönen Polarlichter). Bei unter -20°C bewährte sich hier die Arc'teryx-Kombination aus Merino-Woll-Lagen, dicker Coreloft-Fütterung mit Windstopper sowie einer Gore-Tex-Lage ausgezeichnet. Am zweiten Tag ging es auf die mit 903 m Höhe angegebenen Pyramide am Foxpasset. Am Gipfel konnten wir ein weiteres Mal die Sonne im Gesicht genießen. Nach einer Pulver-Abfahrt zurück zum Camp ging es mit den Pulkas bei traumhaften Schnee über den Fleinisen, das Foxdalen und den langen flachen Weg durch das Adventdalen zurück zum Ausgangspunkt.












We, Mathilde, Pernille, Morgan, Mauro and me, used the good weather conditions at the weekend for a two-day adventure. Equipped with two pulkas and the cute dog named Wellmann, we went by ski from Adventdalen across the Foxfonna icecap to Foxpasset. South of the saddle we build up our camp on Dalburgbreen at an altitude of about 700 m a.s.l. After enjoying the dinner four of us could go to sleep, while alternately one of us had to watch for polar bears (and of course to observe the amazing northern lights). Bei at least -20°C the combination of the Arc'teryx Merino wool base layer, thick Coreloft insulation with Windstopper and an extra Gore-Tex-Layer proved successfully in practice. Next morning we climbing the beautiful snow pyramide, which is labelled in the map with an altitude of 903 m a.s.l., near the Foxpasset. At the peak we enjoyed once again the sun in our faces and the view to the wonderful arctic landscape.Discovering good snow conditions, we had a nice downhill back to the glacier, before we started with the pulkas towards Fleinisen. Through the Foxdalen we reached the Adventdalen and we followed the big valley back to the starting point.
